Five Gallon Ideas website shares how to make a self resetting mouse trap that can be used with water  or without water at the bottom of a five gallon bucket. If your goal is to kill the mice, add 5 inches of water. If you want the mice to remain alive to be released elsewhere – do not add water.

A five gallon bucket, a pop can strung across the top of the bucket with a thin layer of peanut butter smeared on the pop can and a piece of wood place as a pathway so the mice can get to the bucket.
