Dehydrating Unusual Backpacking Meals

Learning the concept of dehydrating unusual backpacking meal is a great way preserve food, decrease the weight and make it more transportable. Dehydrating your own MRE, hiking, camping or natural disaster food storage supplies is vastly more thrifty than buying higher price freeze dried meals. Yes, it does take some time and effort but it is well worth it and can be reconstituted into a delicious meals.

Here are a few ideas to try:

Spaghetti

Chili

Scrambled Eggs

Hamburger bits

Mac and Cheese

Meats (thinly sliced or cubed)

Vegetables

Fruits

Bread

You may want to experiment by making an extra portion when creating a meal, then roughly chop up and dehydrate. Bring water to a rolling boil, add dehydrated meal and stir.

Unstuffed Peppers recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs hamburger

  • 3 or 4 green bell peppers

  • 1⁄2 sweet onion

  • 2 (14 ounce) cans diced tomatoes

  • 4 cups cooked rice

  • salt and pepper

Directions

  1. Brown hamburger in skillet, salt and pepper

  2. Slice peppers and onion; saute in hamburger grease

  3. Add tomatoes

  4. Simmer until peppers are soft

  5. Drain grease

  6. Stir in cooked rice until all ingredients are distributed evenly

6 to 8 servings
