Also known as field balm, catswort, and catmint, catnip is a plant of the mint family with oval-toothed grayish leaves. Before naturalizing in Canada and the northeastern US, this plant (nepeta cataria) has been native to central Europe. Despite being a strong-smelling herb commonly associated with cats, catnip has proven to be very beneficial (health-wise) to humans.

When taken as tea, catnip tends to function like a natural antacid that can help with flatulence, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and colic. The plant is believed to have certain medicinal properties that help treat migraines and insomnia along with some calming properties that can effectively relieve anxiety and stress in humans.

How to make a cup of Catnip Tea:

3. Place tea ball infuser into a teacup then slowly pour boiling hot water into teacup.

4. Let the Catnip tea steep for 3 to 5 minutes. (Buy Here from Amazon) 

5. Remome tea ball infuser from cup.

6. Add sugar, honey or milk…. or nothing at all.

Leaves and flowers obtained from the common catnip plant are used to make catnip tea. In some cases, the roots of this herb can be equally used to make tea. But rather than act as a relaxing agent, it becomes a stimulant. Catnip tea contains some essential elements such as sodium, selenium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, iron, calcium, and vitamins A, B, and C.

No doubt, the only sure way to the experience the full health benefits of catnip is tea. When ingested in sufficient amounts, this amazing herb can act as a sedative to help with insomnia. Interestingly, it also helps to soothe irritation and also works as a muscle relaxant.

Catnip is a relatively versatile plant, it can grow in a multitude of climates and does not require much care besides watering. While they cannot survive in a below freezing climate, the catnip plant has been known to comeback after being killed by low temperature. Harvesting this plant is relatively straight forward, simply cut off how much you would like and ether using a dehydrator or the sun, dry to herb until it is ready to be used.
