3 Key Homeownership Considerations Which New Homeowners Should Become Experts In

For first-time homeowners, the initial moving process can be scary, intimidating and overwhelming. There is a lot to learn, regardless of whether you’re buying a homestead or an inner-city property. The key to succeeding and getting comfortable as soon as possible to focus your attention on the important things and use your time effectively.

This quick guide is dedicated to three of the most important considerations that new homeowners should consider both before they move and during the first few days or weeks in their property. With any luck, this will prepare new homesteaders or property buyers for homeownership.

1. Home Cleaning

To start with, every homeowner needs to become an expert in cleanliness, hygiene and home cleaning techniques. In fact, this should be a skill that you develop before you move into a home of your own but even if you haven’t, you should learn before you move.

This is important for a host of different reasons. Firstly, and most obviously, a clean house is a healthy one. Reducing bacteria build-up and maintaining a good environment will help ensure everyone in your home is happy and healthy, as well as protecting any animals you might have around.

Secondly, cleanliness helps maintain your property. By cleaning regularly, the building you reside in is more likely to look better and last longer, ensuring it maintains its value if you ever decide to sell and move on. If you let the cleaning slip, you’re going to find it much more difficult to sell at the price which your home deserves.

Finally, the reason why you should be an expert in this skill before you move is because when you arrive at your new home, you will likely find it in disarray. New marks and stains will be visible now that all the furnishings have been removed and as a result, you will need to spend the first day doing a comprehensive spring clean to get everything in top condition. Only then can you move all of your own furniture in and start settling down.

So, if you don’t clean often, it’s worth learning now!

2. Your Home Insurance Policy

Another detail which all homeowners should become experts in is their home insurance policy. Home insurance is an important part of homeownership and can protect you from incurring huge, unaffordable costs. However, many people don’t know what their policy covers, how it works or how to put in a claim.

This is completely counterproductive as there’s no point in paying for home insurance if you don’t know how to use it. This is also important because different policies operate in wildly different ways. There are even some threats to your home which can be specifically mentioned within a policy and allow you to claim money back. For example, rising damp and home insurance is often a confusing subject, with some policies choosing to explicitly mention that it is included/not included, depending on their preference. Similarly, extreme weather can be covered by some policies and not others. Ensuring that you have read your policy in-depth and are fully aware of what it covers is essential for all homeowners, new or experienced.

3. Neighbourhood Rules and Courtesies

Finally, we should emphasise the importance of neighbourhoods and their unique cultures. Even if you are living in a homestead, other properties can be dotted in the surrounding area and communal centres like villages or towns, where supplies can be bought, will also have their own way of doing things. When you first move in, learning these quirks of your neighbourhood is essential for fitting in quickly and building valuable friendships.

To achieve this, greet your neighbours after you arrive. Consider bringing a small gift to try and get off on the right foot. Get used to introducing yourself to others in your street, village or area and try to get an idea of whether there are any special systems or unspoken rules you should keep in mind. If in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask. In the end, these are the same people which will be best placed to help you if you find yourself in need; so, securing their friendship is going to be invaluable.

With these considerations in mind, you should be fully prepared to move into a new area and thrive. Just remember to take your time preparing and everything should go smoothly.
