A yurt is a portable dwelling and can be set up fairly quickly. You could have one in your backyard. You would first want to build a wooden deck for it to sit on to get it off the ground. The yurt is composed of rafters that have a compression rig around them at the top. This makes the bottom of the rafters where they meet the wall push outwards and so a rope or other material is tied around the yurt to keep the rafters in place and the compression ring keeps it all in place by ,,,well by compressing the rafters.

The walls are made of a lattice work and then covered with felt. Once the felt is on the outer walls are covered with canvas. There are variations in style and materials but that is the basics of a yurt.   David Buzz shows us how to make a portable Mongolian Yurt.
