By far the thing that people seem to miss the most when they stop using store bought detergent is the fragrance. Although most agree it’s worth the loss of that wonderful scent to know your clothes haven’t been coated with synthetic ingredients and (in some cases) endocrine disruptors, it’s hard not to miss.

But there’s good news! You don’t need to give up the comfort of that sweet smell just because you ditch the lab created chemicals. Instead, you can make your own scented laundry booster with just two simple ingredients. It takes a matter of seconds to create your own scented laundry crystals, so there’s no need to walk around in plain smelling clothes ever again.

You will need:

• 1 cup Epsom or rock salt

• 20 drops of the essential oil of your choice

Time required – about 1 minute.

Instructions:

Combine the salt and essential oils in a bowl and mix them thoroughly. Then seal it in an airtight storage container (a clean and dry reused pickle jar works fine), and you’re done.

To use – add 1 tablespoon to your laundry with your detergent. The salt will dissolve, softening the water as it does, and distribute the fragrance throughout, lightly scenting your clothes. One cup will last for approximately 16 loads.

Want to get the same scents you’re already used to? Here are some popular commercial fragrances you can recreate with oils:

“Mountain Fresh” is made by blending clary sage, petitgrain, and vetiver.

“Cool Water” is a mix of bergamot, chamomile, coriander, elemi, and pink peppercorn.

“Forest” requires a combination of bergamot, cedarwood, and petitgrain.

Essential oils are an affordable way to make your laundry smell according to the emotions you need in your life.
