Watch this amazing video of Finnish men building a log house with nothing but hand tools. You will see them build this house from cutting down the trees to hanging the doors. Unfortunately it is in Finnish but it is still a great video and even though you can’t understand the words just watching these master craftsmen build this home was so worth the time.
The set a foundations of stone and then before adding the first logs they put some natural insulation on the stone. I believe it was wool but it might have been a mix of wool and moss. This is how it was done back in the day. Folks chose a spot and there was no electricity so they had no choice but to do everything with hand tools. These fellows really know what they are doing. Watching them peel the bark and shave the logs to make them flat and then to cut the holes for the windows. When they put the logs down to begin the floor the first wrapped the bottom and side of each log in birch bark to protect it from moisture I suppose.
Once all the logs were in place a couple feet apart they filled in between them with dirt and then laid the wood floor over this. I was really fascinated watching this video and I know any one that has any interest in log cabin building will probably be just as interested as I was. Can you even imagine in this day and age of rechargeable tools setting out to build a home with nothing but hand tools. It certainly would be an accomplishment. Enjoy.
