There’s little to compare with a warm breakfast bun especially on a cold winter morning. Cinnamon buns in particular are on everyone’s list of favorite indulgences which can be seen by the success of companies selling only the cinnamon bun. Cinnamon buns have been a favorite of many societies.

North America and Northern Europe are the top world locations to find cinnamon buns on the menu. Sweden normally gets credit for creating the contemporary version. October 4th is commonly known as Cinnamon bun day.

But the history of sweet breads goes back much further. Some of the earliest documentation is from ancient Egypt, where bread was a major portion of the diet. Although there are no recipes in the pyramids for a cinnamon bun, we can guess they managed something similar since cinnamon was revered enough to be the spice of the Pharaohs.

It seems a complicated sweet bread but anything that has been in food history for millennia needs a look as something you can likely make yourself. Cinnamon buns are a yeast bread so you will need access to yeast and like all sweet breads, they need sugar and eggs.

Ingredients for Dough:

1 cup of milk

2 eggs

1/3 cup of salted butter

4 1/2 cups of flour

1/2 a cup of white sugar

2 tablespoons of yeast

Ingredients for Cinnamon Filling:

1 cup of brown sugar

3 tablespoons of ground cinnamon

1/3 cup of salted butter

Ingredients for Frosting:

4 ounces softened plain cream cheese

1/4 cup of butter softened

1 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Once the dough is made, a simple rolling technique gives them the classic rolled and stacked look. They don’t have a long rising time so it’s easy enough to make them when the whim hits or if you expect guests for afternoon coffee. A simple cream cheese icing typically finishes them off.

If you’re a self-sufficient baker, you will want to consider making your own version of the famous and long lived cinnamon bun. Read on for a recipe that you’ll want to keep as a family classic.
