If you do a lot of crafting that involves modeling clay or paper mache pulp, you’ve probably seen that eat into your budget. How is store-bought clay so expensive? I have no idea, but I do have a good alternative.
Using lint from your dryer’s lint trap, you can create an eco-friendly, cost-effective modeling clay alternative with just a few simple ingredients.
You will need:
• 3 cups of dryer lint (low to no animal fur is preferable, but not necessary)
• 2 cups of water
• 2/3 cups all purpose flour
Instructions:
1. Add lint to a saucepan.
2. Slowly stir in the water.
3. Add flour and mix in.
4. Turn the stovetop on low heat and continue to stir to create a smooth mixture.
5. Once the mixture has an even consistency and holds together, remove from heat.
6. Cool.
Use:
You’ll notice that your clay has a consistency similar to store-bought paper mache pulp. Your clay can be used similarly, to create something from scratch, to add form to a wire armature figure, or to build up a shell around a balloon or pinata.
Your project will take a few days to fully dry – longer if it was not used over a hollow object. Once it’s fully dry, you can paint it using standard acrylic paints, or leave it as is.
Preserving your art:
As you would with store-bought products, you’ll need to put a sealant over your finished creation to keep it protected over the years.
I am a firm believer that almost everything can be recycled or re-purposed into a useful item.
