A Murphy bed , also called a wall bed, pull down bed, or fold-down bed, is a bed that is hinged at one end to store vertically against the wall, or inside a closet or cabinet. Murphy beds are used for space-saving purposes, much like trundle beds, and are popular where floor space is limited, such as small homes, apartments and cabins.

A Murphy bed is a type of bed that fold-down from the wall, which is why it is also known as a wall bed. It is held upright and can easily pulled down, blending in with camouflage and saving space in the bedroom. This is common in small one-room apartments and has been around for the last 100 years courtesy of its creator, William Lawrence Murphy. They have been altered to be fitted in with lighting, cabinets, and shelves.

They have become popular again because of the housing crisis, where young adults cannot afford any apartment, so they move back in with their parents. To accommodate them, they can fix up their home by installing these fold outs in the walls.

This type of bed does not have springs, but only the wooden bottom and bed frame it is attached to. More importantly, it has to be fastened properly. Others like the office-like side where plenty of cabinets allows people to put in books and keep it in place even when you fold it down for the bed. So, with that being said, people like to build their own Murphy bed and bookcase.

The overall dimensions for this whole project are 104″ wide x 82-3/4″ tall x 18-1/4″ deep. Get five pieces of plywood at 4’ x 8’ x 3/4,” two more pieces at 4’ x 8’ x 1/4,” one piece of MDF at 4’ x 8’ x 1/2,” at a 3/4’ thick piece at 60 bd. feet. Without needing to explain, this is not a simple IKEA project. In the end, however, this a great addition to your home or apartment.
