Homesteading Kindling Firewood Splitter Tool

The Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter is sturdy device made entirely out of cast iron in a foundry in Australia. It is incredibly simple and uses the familiar wedge shape blade that splits the log with the grain of the wood. This design forces the wood into a wedge, which is the exact opposite of how the blade of an axe works, which helps to reduce the amount of force you need to exert into it in order to split the same amount of wood as you would swinging an axe.

Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter

A little about the creator:

While the product is quite simple, the more interesting part is where the idea came from that got the whole thing made. A fourteen year old teenage girl from Australia, was watching her mom carefully wielding a small axe in an attempt to make kindling for a fire out of a recently chopped log. As she watched her mom getting closer and closer to her fingers as she whacked away with the axe, she was thinking and before long she came up with a prototype that eventually became the Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter.

Pros

● Keeps fingers safely away from danger

● Requires less force than a traditional splitter

● Make a pile of kindling in a matter of minutes

● Maintenance free design

● All cast iron construction

Cons

● Oversized logs will not fit inside

● A bit on the expensive side

Uses and Ease of Operation

Every successful wood fire must begin with the right amount and size of kindling. This is where this little gem comes in handy, it will turn a couple of small logs into a pile of useful kindling with much less effort. The unique wedge design of the splitting surface forces the wood apart as you drive the log downward using a hammer, mallet or another log. Standing at 12 in tall and has a 6.5 in inner diameter, you can easily split decent size logs into the best looking kindling you have ever seen. It has built in mounting holes so that it can be anchored to a stump for extra support.

My Final Thoughts

It truly amazing that this handy tool was created by such a young person. What is even better is that she came up with the idea in order to help prevent her mom from accidentally chopping off one or more of her fingers with the sharp blade of the families axe. If you have ever tried to start a good fire in a fireplace, fire pit or barbecue, you know that without a good amount of small, kindling wood, you are not likely going to be very successful. That means you need to split some of the logs into smaller splinters. This often meant holding smaller pieces by hand and using a sharp axe.

The Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter takes away the danger and replaces it with a much smaller amount of effort and in just a few minutes you can have all the kindling you would need for several fires.

This would make the perfect gift for anyone who warms their home with a wood burning fire, entertains outside around a roaring fire or even cooks an occasional pizza in their authentic wood burning pizza oven.
