How to Frugally Build Cordwood Flooring

This brief guide goes through the simple steps to creating your very own cordwood flooring. This is a truly unique way to floor your home that is also a lot easier than most hardwood installs. Plus, unlike other floor options, this one is varied and unique, since every piece of wood is different.

The best part is that you can find the majority of the parts you’ll need for this floor outside, at no cost to you!

To get this cordwood floor, all you need to do is pick up a few dead trees up. Though the authors legally used dead trees from a state forest, you can get these trees anywhere, as long as you’re allowed to use them. The wood used in this tutorial was juniper, though it will work with other wood types.

The next step is cutting down the trees into 1” sections. After preparing your floor, you’ll glue these sections as close together as possible. Then you’ll overlay it with grout and layers of polyurethane. And just like that, you’ll have a gorgeous, one of a kind, wood floor.
