How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies On The Homestead

As we head into warmer days the knowledge of how to get rid of fruit flies on the homestead is a reprieve from those persistent annoying pests. I swear that swatting flies and fruit flies becomes a sport in my household during the summer months. Our dogs even get into the action by jumping up and trying to snap them in their jaws in which the family cheers “Good Job”.

Method One:

  1. Heat the apple cider vinegar in the microwave for about 10 seconds which releases more of the vinegar’s fragrance.

  2. Pour 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and 2 drops Dawn dish soap in a small shallow dish and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Dawn dish soap breaks the surface tension

  3. Poke a small/medium entrance hole into the top of the plastic wrap so those fruit flies can find there way into the shallow dish.

  4. Fruit flies can’t resist the scent of apple cider vinegar.

Method Two:

  1. Pour 1/4 cup of wine inside a tall glass and top it with a funnel. A funnel creates a small entrance for the fruit flies enter while still trapping them because they rarely find a way out. At least they get drunk before they bite the dust.

  2. Bonus tip: You can make a disposable paper funnel with a simple twist of the paper that is a circular shape and a small piece of tape. (click here if you need help making one)

House Flies: You can push thirty five cloves into a fresh ripe apple and place on a paper plate to keep house flies away.
