Here is a neat tutorial to show you how to make a jar lantern. This might be fun to make with school age kids. I think these jar lanterns would be neat for camping or even when you are sitting outside after dark.
I know kids in tents would love them. Randofo shows us how to make them out of a jar with lid, a cfl bulb and parts from a disposable camera. You will need a soldering iron, hot glue gun along with a couple of other small parts and tools. The light bulb in the jar is powered by one AA battery. Once you have seen all the steps for making a jar lantern be sure to read the comments because there is some useful info from folks there.
For instance, to get some free disposable cameras one person says you can go to a store that has photo service, like a pharmacy and ask for some for a project. After they remove the photos the camera get recycled so they will probably give you some. If you get started soon, the kids could carry one on Halloween.
