How to Make the Most of Your Home in Summer 2020

Not feeling the summer heat yet? You know it’s on its way. If you’re reading this during the peak of the season, we bet you wish you had some solutions for the challenges that summer temperatures bring.

Of course most of us love the warm summer days that give us a chance to enjoy the outdoors. But there are certain situations that can be bothersome: are you facing high humidity, high utility bills because the AC is on all the time, or you don’t know what to do with the kids when they complain about the heat?

The good news: there’s a lot you can do to prepare your home this year for the coming summer months. We’ll outline five simple ways you can optimize your spaces, without spending a fortune.

Do an Energy Audit

First up, take a walk through your home and consider all the areas you may need to work on. Perhaps you discover a broken ceiling fan that you didn’t know about because you don’t use it during the winter. You’ll regret not replacing it when summer comes!

Take it one step further and get an expert to conduct an energy consumption audit. A major complaint from homeowners is the fact that they use a lot of energy to keep their houses cool. But perhaps your AC unit needs a fix or your fridge simply needs a service to work optimally without drawing too much power — an energy audit will point you in the right direction.

Consider Smart Living

If energy consumption and your carbon footprint is important to you, consider investing in smart and energy saving devices. If you can control them via your phone or sensors to turn off the AC and lights when you’re not in the room, you’ll save on utility costs.

Touch-ups do Wonders

You can give your home a new look and even help yourself manage the heat by simply adding a coat of paint: do you know how much energy you’ll save when you turn your dark colored roof into a white one? And all it takes is a DIY paint day. Just remember to stay safe while you’re up there!

You can also prevent the sun from entering your home by covering windows. Whether you plant a tree outside that’s positioned correctly to block off the sun, or you add awnings, a little shade can do wonders.

Upgrade Your Garden

Don’t just consider the inside of your home: what about the outside? Make your outside areas more habitable so they stay usable even on the hottest days.

A patio can become everyone’s refuge from the heat when you install a patio cover. When using reputable companies such as City Seamless Patio Covers, you don’t have to worry about the covers getting ruined by the sun — you’re making a long-term investment that increases your property value.

Solid construction will give kids shade to play in and modern designs can even include insulation, which blocks even more heat. At night you can relax with a glass of wine while enjoying the fresh air. After all, shouldn’t summer be the time you spend outside?

Last Tip: Use Color

You’d be surprised how powerful color can be. Add some blue to your rooms this coming summer. Cool colors can give you a sense of coolness rather than heat. And using lighter hues in decor means the room will absorb less light and heat.

A few small changes can make a huge difference and help you enjoy your home this year despite the heat. Let’s get ready for summer!
