If you have a crab apple tree or know someone who does you might like to make these old-fashioned pickled and spiced refrigerator crap apples. Although they are pickled with vinegar the recipe also calls for sugar so the pickling is the sort that is for sweet pickles or for cowboy candy (sweet Pickled jalapenos).
The spices are cinnamon, cloves and ginger so I think these would be really good as garnish or even a side. It sounds like a perfect way to use crab apples. The recipe makes me wish I had a crab apple tree so that I could make some. This is a small batch so the directions are for refrigerator apples but if you had lots you could make bigger batches and can them. It looks pretty easy to make and there is minimal fruit prep. You don’t have to peel or even cut the crab apples up.
Just make sure to poke them with a fork a couple of times. Other wise the article says they will fall apart. The recipe is from A Hundred Years Ago. The stems are left on the apples and I think these would go well on a cheese tray. The sweet spiced apples I think would go well with cheese the way apple pie is so good with a slice of cheddar.
