Make some delicious popcorn balls. These are a delicious treat and I think most folks have forgotten all about them. I used this recipe to make popcorn balls to send to school with my kids every year as a treat for the class. They are easy to make and the kids all loved them. Now days most school don’t allow homemade treats if they allow treats at all. These are a great treat to make at Halloween but we like them any time of year.
You can add in candies or nuts if you like. I have added m&ms, candy corn, redhots, pecan halves and various other candy and nuts at times. I only add one each time so the popcorn flavor doesn’t get lost. These are good with or without add ins.
Popcorn Balls
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup white corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 half cup minus 1 tablespoon water
4 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
10 quarts popped popcorn
Pop the corn and place in large roaster or 2 baking pans. you will need room to stir the coating onto it.
In a large heavy pan, cook, water, salt, sugar and corn syrup to 245 degrees on a candy thermometer. or the soft ball stage.
Turn off the heat and add the vanilla and butter, stir till butter has melted and stirred in.
Pour over the popcorn and then stir to coat evenly. Stir in any add ins you have chosen.
As soon as it has cooled enough to handle start forming into 3 inch balls. If needed wet your hands with cold water as you work to prevent the popcorn from sticking to you.
Lay the formed balls on a Pam sprayed cookie sheet till thoroughly cooled. wrap each ball in wax paper or put into treat bags when cooled.
Makes approx, 30 balls
