Just read how in the 16th century a small band of thieves supposedly went into plague victims homes to steal valuables, when they were caught and brought before the king he wanted to know why they didn’t catch the plague.
Seems the thieves were all from the same family and had apothecaries in a long line of ancestors.
So they had knowledge of the healing arts including various oils. They developed what is now called ” Thieves oil “
