Tips For Keeping Your Chickens Cool in Summer Heat

Summer is one of the most exciting times of the year for chickens. This is the season when they get to enjoy more freedom from winter months and just enjoy exploring the surroundings amidst warmer weather.

However, summer is also that time when it is a must for chicken owners to be more vigilant. The extreme temperatures can quickly take their toll on your beloved chickens. This is why is extremely essential to take proper heat precautions.

Chicken owners should watch out for initial signs of heatstroke. First, chickens look lethargic and they don’t actively move around. Chickens suffering from heatstroke also have their beaks opened with spread out wings. They look like panting dogs when it happens. They also have no or little intake of water and food.

According to Scoop from the Coop, once summer days kick in, you have to ensure that your chickens always have access to clean and fresh water. It will be a great idea to give them fresh hour every 24 hours at the least.

Dirty and stagnant water can attract mosquitoes and act as petri dish that holds diseases. Lukewarm and old water is unappealing to your chickens and will only make them stop drinking. This can then lead to forced molt, lower egg production, dehydration, and worst, even death.
