Tips To Survive Extreme Hot Weather at Home

When the sweltering weather hits, staying cool and comfortable at home is tough. You are sweaty, have low energy, and can’t seem to get away from the heat. Here are some tips that will help you survive the scorching weather this summer.

Make Sure the Air Conditioning Is Working Efficiently

It’s stressful when the AC isn’t working and it’s hot. Make sure to check the filters and have them cleaned every few months so that your AC runs more efficiently and keeps you cool when you need it. Have regular inspections and attend to issues promptly. Have an AC tune up done by a professional, just before the hot weather kicks in.

Use Fans Strategically

Fans circulate air, making you feel more relaxed, but only if you use them correctly. Place a fan facing away from you to create a cooling breeze, or in front of an open window to bring in fresh cool air. An alternative to fans is powered attic ventilators. They pull the hot air out of your attic, keeping your home cool.

Use Insulation To Keep the Heat Out

Insulate your house to keep the heat out. Install storm windows and doors, seal leaks with caulking or weatherstripping, add insulation to your attic and walls, and make sure your windows are double-paned. Covering windows with drapes or shades keeps direct sunlight away.

Install Window Air Conditioners

Window air conditioners are a great way to cool a room. They’re affordable, easy to install, and excellent choices for spaces you spend a lot of time in. Just make sure you get the right size for the room you’re cooling.

Stay Hydrated

Because you lose fluids when you sweat, be sure to drink plenty of fluids – especially water – when the weather is hot. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol because they can dehydrate you. Drink more water when carrying out rigorous tasks, as you’ll sweat more, and stick to cold beverages, as they keep you cooler longer.

Wear Lightweight, Loose-Fitting Clothing

Lightweight clothes that allow your skin to breathe keep you more relaxed when the weather is hot. Tight-fitting clothing traps heat and makes you feel warmer. Try to wear natural fabrics such as cotton and linen instead of synthetic materials like polyester.

Take Cool Baths or Showers

When the weather is hot, taking a cool bath or a shower helps you feel cooler and more comfortable. Drink fluids before and after bathing to stay hydrated. If you’re unable to take a cold shower, stand in front of a fan with a cool, wet towel.

If you’re having trouble staying cool, put some ice in a washcloth and place it on your neck or forehead. Alternatively, freeze water bottles and use them as cold packs.

Limit Your Activity Level

When the weather is hot, limit your activity level. Doing too much makes you sweatier, increasing the risk of dehydration. Try to do activities such as reading, that don’t require a lot of energy. Plan your day to do more strenuous activities earlier in the day when it’s cooler.

Take a Break From Work and Stay Inside

When the weather is sweltering, it’s best to take a break from work if you can. Stay inside and relax where it’s air-conditioned. Taking a break reduces stress levels, making you feel more comfortable. If you have to go outside, do it in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.

Use the Oven Less Frequently

The oven produces a lot of heat, making your house feel even hotter. Use it less frequently when it’s hot outside. If you have to, keep its door closed, and do the food preparation before turning on the oven.

Follow These Tips for More Comfort

These tips will help you survive extreme hot weather at home. You’ll stay cool and more comfortable, reducing stress levels and improving your productivity. With a proper plan, you can carry out tasks when it’s still cool, conserving your energy for the hotter parts of the day.
