Undеrѕtаnding Whаt It Mеаn Tо Bесоmе Sеlf-Suffісіеnt

farm-vegetables-gardening-441036-hIt іѕ ‘wе’ whо nееd tо іnіtіаtе thіngѕ fоr оur оwn саuѕе; tо ѕесurе оur tоdау аnd іmрrоvе оur tоmоrrоw lessening our dереndеnce оn еxtеrnаl ѕоurсе such as supermarkets and big box stores.

Hеrе’ѕ а quісk guіdе оn hоw tо gеt оnе ѕtер сlоѕеr tо а ѕuѕtаіnаblе lіvіng.

Fіrѕt, lеt’ѕ undеrѕtаnd whаt dоеѕ іt mеаn tо bесоmе ѕеlf-ѕuffісіеnt. It іѕ а ѕtаtе оf bеіng іndереndеnt whеrе уоu nо lоngеr nееd аnу аіd, ѕuрроrt, аnd аѕѕіѕtаnсе frоm аnуоnе еlѕе оthеr thаn уоurѕеlf tо ѕurvіvе аnd ѕuѕtаіn. 1. Grow a garden (Invest in great books and take advantage of the years of their knowledge to avoid as many mistakes as possible)
2. Make food from scratch – learn to create your own mixes
3. Learn to sew and upcycle clothing. Crochet/Knitting is another great skill.
4. Invest in creating your own personal library of how to books on every subject that could benefit your homestead. ( Check our book section for suggestions.)
5. Get the right tools to help make this new lifestyle easier so you do not burn out. With the right tools, you work smarter not harder. If you garden, you need a shovel… you would not use your hands.
6. Learn to preserve your food – canning, dehydrating, pickling, fermentation. (We have tons of articles on the blog about all these subjects because it is so important)
7. Learn to save seeds from the vegetables and fruit you grow for the following gardening season.
8. Get in better physical shape…start walking, lifting small weights, play a physical video game like Wii or Play Station ….exercise games are wonderful.
9. Learn about wild food foraging. Look for guides walks with an educated teacher, get books, visit your state extension office with samples that you picked, watch YouTube videos, find DVD’s on the subject.
10. If you eat meat or eggs, learn to raise chickens.
11. Volunteer on a farm, great exercise and you will gain so much knowledge.
12. Take a CPR class and any other medical course offered.
13. Attend Off The Grid workshops and listen and absorb all the knowledge they are willing to share.
14. Become empowered and start making “DIY” Do It Yourselves projects… you will be surprised at how much more you can do and how quickly your skill set grows.
15. Learn the useful skill of bartering (car batteries, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate, antibiotics )
16. Don’t let pride stop you from becoming a Gleaner (picking free fruit & vegetables). Don’t let fruit, vegetables and wild food go to waste.
17. Share your knowledge with others. I tell anyone who will listen and end up learning something from every person I meet.
18. Learn how to identify and use Herbal remedies could save your life short and long term.
19. Spend less time watching TV… but if you do all these things, it will come naturally, lol.
20. Try to incorporate as many Off The Grid type projects into your homestead. Solar panels, non electric kitchen tools, wood heat, wind power…. even a solar panel backpack that charges your cell phone or laptop is a step in the right direction.
