Wind Turbine Off The Grid Energy DIY Project The Homestead Survival

This Wind Turbine Off The Grid Energy DIY Project will help the moviatated homesteader one great step towards self sufficiency. Alternative energy sources is a big part of going green and also off-grid living. A huge benefit of switching over to partial or total wind power. Depending on the power needs of your home you can build a wind turbine generator that is powerful enough to generate the needed amount of power.

Wind Turbine Off The Grid Energy DIY Project The Homestead Survival

This article was designed to introduce the reader to a DIY project for building a homemade wind turbine generator.

How do wind turbines make electricity? Simply stated, wind turbines work the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind—like a fan—wind turbines use wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades, which in turn spins a generator to create electricity.

Wind Turbine Blades: 4 feet and ten inches long and they are cut to hold a 45 degree pitch from the hub all the way to the tip.

The pole to hold the erected wind turbine was made with 6×6′ lumber. It’s 20 feet tall. A thousand pounds of concrete was used anchor it securely five feet deep in the ground.

When the wind flows across the blade, the air pressure on one side of the blade decreases. The difference in air pressure across the two sides of the blade creates both lift and drag. The force of the lift is stronger than the drag and this causes the rotor to spin. The rotor is connected to the generator, either directly (if it’s a direct drive turbine) or through a shaft and a series of gears (a gearbox) that speed up the rotation and allow for a physically smaller generator. This translation of aerodynamic force to rotation of a generator creates electricity.

This Do It Yourself project was created and shared with all of the readers as a way to help fellow DIYers come up with a way to use alternative power for their home.

The project describes all of the things that are necessary to have on hand and it also includes a complete, easy to read and follow instructional guide for building the wind turbine.
