I have seen where they will have one end a littl more cloed that the other so they can cook on it. Very cool way to build a winter fire. If you add a back drop of a log wall on the side opposite of your shelter you can heat your shelter over night. The video really shows well how to build the long fire.

Check out his bed behind him. It is off the ground on logs and then small saplings ,ake the actual bed part.
