7 Tips To Make A Stress-Free Move A Reality

Moving into a new home can be stressful, especially since you’ll need to bring all of your things with you. Not only will you need to accomplish exhausting tasks to make your new home livable, but you’ll also need to adjust to the new environment and allow yourself to live comfortably.

Before you drive and move into your new home on the day of the turnover, you should prepare everything to make the transition smoother and faster. You wouldn’t want to arrive at your new home only to find out that you’ve left most of your belongings in your old house. One can only imagine the hassle it will cause you.

Listed below are some tips you can use for a stress-free move:

1. Consider Hiring A Mover

Since you’ll need to transfer bulky items such as appliances and furniture into your new home, you might want to consider hiring NYC commercial movers instead of making multiple trips and transporting these using your own car.

While hiring a mover can cost you money, you’ll be saving a lot of effort and time since you won’t have to do everything by yourself. Moreover, traveling back and forth with your car isn’t a practical move, since you’ll have to pay for more gas money and perhaps damage your vehicle with the heavy items on its trunk.

When looking for reliable movers, you should try to look for a company near your location. This way, you can avoid delays that may affect your moving schedule for the entire day or even week.

Moreover, a moving company should provide insurance for the items to be transported. By doing so, you can rest assured in case something goes wrong with the vehicle while in transit, causing damage to your items, especially for fragile and valuable ones.

2. Create a Checklist

Before you begin packing and calling for services, you should first create a thorough checklist to cover everything you need to accomplish before your move-in day. This is to ensure you won’t miss anything important that can hinder your move.

Ideally, you should create a list on your computer and sync it to your mobile phone or tablet so you can view it on the go. If you’re moving with your family, you should also sync the list with your spouse’s device so they can see the tasks you need to accomplish days before.

In making a practical checklist, you should start with the tasks you need to do months before your moving day. These may include shopping for new furniture online or hiring a home inspector to detect any damage and a repair company that can make your home more livable and safer.

As you create your list, include the specifics as much as possible. This may even include the smallest details such as your toothbrush. While you can always purchase a new one at a nearby store, you wouldn’t want your first day to be filled with stress looking for missing items.

While it’s convenient to have a digital copy of your checklist, keeping a physical copy can be helpful as well. This way, you can check the list anytime and tick your accomplishments off the list when you need to. You don’t even have to worry about losing the file on the cloud.

3. Set Aside Enough Time For Packing

No matter the quantity or size of your items, you should give yourself enough time for packing. You cannot expect yourself to remember all the things in your cabinets. Thus, you may need some extra time separating the items you’re bringing with you and the ones you’re donating or leaving behind.

Remember that while you may badly want to, you can’t simply bring everything with you. You can choose to donate, sell, or give them to someone you know who might need them. This task may look easy but it may take you days or weeks to fully separate or get rid of your things, especially if they’re huge.

You might want to consider taking a few days off from work for packing and moving. In doing so, you can focus completely on organizing your things instead of worrying about unfinished business at work. Packing after work hours is also doable, but it may not give you enough time to cover everything since you also have to rest.

4. Purchase Packing Materials

Contrary to what’s portrayed in movies, packing doesn’t mean dumping everything into an old box and calling it a day. To make your stress-free move a reality, you have to make sure your packing materials are sturdy enough to prevent damages while in transit.

Ideally, you should purchase moving boxes that are big enough to fit everything you’ve decided to keep. You should look for moving boxes that are thick and can withstand heavy items. This will ensure that the package wouldn’t tear and crumble when you try to lift and move them into the mover’s truck or your trunk.

Apart from picking the right kind of boxes, you shouldn’t forget to purchase bubble wraps or foam peanuts to ensure that your fragile items are safe. Ideally, you should wrap multiple layers around your things to ensure that they won’t break during transit. No matter how careful a person drives, they cannot control the movement of your items inside the box when they hit a bump. For maximum safety, adding a thick layer of bubble wrap should help.

Moreover, you shouldn’t forget to purchase packing tapes and markers to seal and label your boxes properly. Scissors are also necessary for this process, so remember to purchase a sturdy one ahead of time.

5. Implement Proper Organization

As you pack your things inside the box, it would be helpful to arrange them according to their types and placement in the room. Ideally, you should pack valuable items together and write ‘fragile items’ outside the box, so the handler will know that the things inside are prone to breakage and remind them to handle these items carefully.

While it can be tiring to pack similar items together inside their respective boxes, this method is proven to be very convenient once you unpack them in your new home. Through this, you can efficiently distribute the boxes in different rooms and place them in their designated areas. You won’t have to dig into different boxes to look for a particular object you need at the moment.

In packing your items individually, you should write their labels legibly on the side of the box. This allows for easier identification. You can be more specific if you’d like, such as writing down ‘Bedroom #1 linen,’ ‘Bedroom #2 decors,’ and so on. You may also take the extra mile by listing all the items within the inner portion of the box as well, but this can be time-consuming on your part.

6. Buy an Accordion Envelope

Apart from the things mentioned earlier, you shouldn’t forget to bring all the documents you need for your move. You wouldn’t want to encounter problems with the legal aspects of your move by losing or leaving your important documents behind.

To allow for proper organization, you should purchase an accordion envelope to store every important document by category inside. While a regular envelope would work, the accordion one will help you sort your files better and search for them faster. You won’t have to dig inside the envelope to look for a piece of paper when you can rely on the labels in searching for important files.

7. Do Not Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Moving into a new home is not an easy feat. It can be one of the most exhausting things you’ll ever accomplish in your life. You’ll still feel tired and drained even with the help of a moving truck. The packing stage is usually the most tiresome, and it’s not a bad idea to ask for help from anyone you trust.

Ideally, you should call a family member or a friend nearby who would be willing to help you pack. While packing, you’ll also be able to enjoy a bonding moment with them and even reminisce the times spent together in your old house. This is especially true if you’re moving far away since you’ll barely have time to visit them. It’s the best time to make every moment count.

Since they might not accept money as a token of gratitude for their help, you can treat them to a fancy dinner for all their hard work instead.

Conclusion

Moving into a new home allows for a fresh start. However, before you can fully settle in, you need to prepare several things beforehand. To make a stress-free move possible, you should start by planning everything at least a month before your moving day.

After a day of hard work from all the packing and moving, don’t forget to treat yourself and enjoy the rest of the day. You can explore your new neighborhood and even greet your neighbors. Through this, you can attract positivity into your new home and even make lifelong friends to share memories with.
