I used to love to play the game The Oregon Trail. My kids had the game for the computer and we liked to take turns playing. You choose what you wanted to be, for example a guide, a lawman or a doctor.

Each job title paid so much money and that was what you used to equip your wagon train before heading west. You had to buy everything you might need from clothing, rifles, shoes, food supplies and the herbs and things that folks used for medicines back then. You also had to buy your wagons. Along the way you could hunt for meat and forage for fruit or berries. Folks also got sick and hurt. Some would come down with smallpox, dysentery and tuberculosis. Others might get shot hunting or bitten by a rattle snake and just like in real life you had to have the home remedies to help your people.

Some of the remedies could actually still work today, some however couldn’t have really worked back then but I guess if someone is really sick or hurt it is better for everyone if it at least seems like there is a chance.

I haven’t played that game for years and years but I really did enjoy playing it. It was fun to name the characters after people you were mad at and then when they got sick you just didn’t do anything for them and the character woul die.
