Fire Safety Month: Family Safety Checklist
In honor of Fire Safety Month, we’ve created a safety checklist to add to your family binder. Grab it below!
Just before our first anniversary, my partner and I bought our first home. It was cute and perfect for the two (and a half—we were expecting our oldest child). By the time our youngest came along, we had outgrown it. After spending a couple of years searching, we finally found a larger, more suitable house for the five of us.
We moved in, set up the house, and began settling in. About six months later, we got the scare of our lives when police officers ordered mandatory evacuations in our neighborhood due to a growing brush fire that came way too close to our dream home. In a panic, I scrambled to gather what I could, but it was overwhelming trying to decide what was most important in such a short amount of time. I packed up the car, but the experience made me realize how critical it is to have an emergency list prepared in advance.
That moment was a wake-up call. Without a pre-made emergency list, it’s far too easy to forget crucial items or waste precious time during a crisis. Thankfully, we were able to return home later that same day, despite the ash and smoke-filled air. But every October, fires continue to pop up in our area, and it’s a constant reminder that being prepared with a well-thought-out emergency list is essential for keeping our family safe.
