Tourtiere Traditional Meat Pie Recipe

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pastry:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Cut in the butter or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Gradually add cold water, tossing with a fork until the dough forms a ball.
    • Divide dough into two portions, one slightly larger than the other.
    • Roll out the larger portion to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Transfer pastry to pie plate; trim even with edge.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large skillet, cook the ground pork, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink; drain.
    • Add the mashed potatoes and seasonings; mix well.
    • Spoon the filling into the crust.
  3. Assemble the Pie:
    • Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie; place over filling. Trim, seal, and flute edges.
    • Cut slits in top. Brush with the beaten egg.
    • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
    • Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.
