Gardening is a rewarding homesteading activity that ends with a huge harvest of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Sometimes growing plants attract bugs that are harmful mean while other insects are there to help you against harmful insects.

You may not really like insects but some are actually beneficial to your garden. It’s also important to know how to identify a beneficial garden insect versus a pest. Encouraging beneficial insects by growing plants and flowers that attracts good insects is a pest control strategy used in organic gardening.

Beneficial insects help keep your garden from being nibbled upon. For example, a Ground Beetle is an nocturnal insect that is a voracious predator of slugs, snails, cutworms, cabbage maggots and other pests that live in your garden’s soil. Lacewings eat aphids, caterpillars, mealybugs, scales, thrips, and whiteflies. Lady bugs eat aphids, mites, and mealybugs. Spiders eat beetles, caterpillars, leafhoppers and aphids.
