Build a life sized BB8 droid that you control by phone. Why spend 150 dollars and probably be on a waiting list to buy a Sphero BB8 which is very small when you can build this life sized one for less. Using mostly household materials and a little Arduino circuitry. This tutorial by Angelo will show you how he reverse engineered a Sphero toy to build the life size version.

It is amazing how well this turned out when you consider the materials he used. For instance for the wheels he used roller balls from deodorant bottles. This is what made it possible to build the BB8 for less than what the tiny toy costs. All of the steps can be found on Instructables and he says version 2 is coming soon. There is also a BB8 club you can join to learn and share ideas with others.You can find all of this on Instructables.
This would be the perfect gift for anyone that loves or collects Star Wars items. He built it with his father and really enjoyed spending the time with him so I think this could be a great project to build with your kids and imagine their pride when they show their friends what they built with their mom or dad.
