Canning Wild Berry Jam Recipe for the Winter

This canning wild berry jam recipe for the winter can be made with any different combination of berries you chose. Be creative !

Is there anything more enjoyable than tasting warm wild berry jam on toast, while looking out on a snowy landscape? Thanks to canning, you can eat home-picked summer berries in the dead of winter, or anytime you want.

Here’s how to safely turn berries into jam and seal the jars for months of safe storage.

Canning Wild Berry Jam Recipe for the Winter

You will need:

• Berries (you can use different types)

• Sugar

• Sterile jars and lids

• Jar tongs

• Paraffin wax

Please note that paraffin wax is suitable only for short-term canning (around 6 months).

Instructions:

Making jam–

• First, wash your fresh-picked berries and remove any trace of stems.

• Next, add them to a saucepan with an equal amount of water.

• Bring it to a boil and add sugar (around half the volume of berries, to taste).

• Continue to boil, stirring occasionally, until semi-solidification occurs.

Preparing the jars–

• While your jam is cooking, sterilize your jars and lids by boiling them in a large saucepan of water for a minimum of 5 minutes.

• Carefully remove them from the boiling water with the tongs and set them aside to cool. Do not let anything (even your fingers) touch the inside of the jar before you add the jam.

Canning–

• Once the jam is prepared and the jars are cool, pour your jam into the jars, leaving a little head space toward the top for the wax.

• Carefully pour your melted paraffin wax on top of the jam in the rim of the jar to create a seal.

• Screw on the lids and store in a cool, dark, dry place.

Now you can indulge in the sweetness of summer’s wild berry jam throughout the autumn and winter months.
