This delicious dark oatmeal molasses bread homesteading baking recipe will fill your kitchen with mouth watering smells from the oven.

Even better is when you get to slice into the loaf, and take a bite.


Even if you are not a huge molasses fan, this bread is really quite special and may just change your mind. It is an old fashioned homemade from scartch recipe that will make your family feel loved and cared for.

Ingredients:

1 cup quick oats

1 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup dark molasses

1/3 brown sugar

2 tablespoon shortening or margarine

2 cups boiling hot water

6 cups flour

1 package Rapid Rising Yeast

Instructions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine oatmeal, salt, brown sugar, shortening and molasses.

2. Pour 2 cups of boiling hot water over the ingredients and mix well.

3. Let cool to lukewarm.

4. Combine 1 cup warm water and one package of rapid rising yeast. Let stand for 10 minutes and add molasses mixture.

5. Add 6 cups of flour slowly while stiring, mix well.

6. Turn out onto a flour covered kitchen countertop and knead well.

7. After kneading well, place dough into a bowl and let it rise to double the size.

8. Shape into loaves and place into buttered bread pans.

9. Makes 2 large or 3 meduim loaves.

10. Cover with a clean dish towel and let the dough rise to the top of the pans.

11. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
