Fall is here and cooler weather has arrived. It is time to enjoys stews and soups again. Here is a recipe for homemade beef stew made in the slow cooker so you get all that great taste that pretty much cooks itself.
Beef stew and a nice hunk of good bread with butter is such a fall and winter meal. It fills you up, warms you up and it tastes so good. Gentle Joy Homemaker shares her recipe for making beef stew in the slow cooker. This looks like a good recipe and I make it very similar to this except I don’t buy baby carrots. I can’t get past the fact that they are treated with a chlorine bath. I never knew this until a bag I had bought didn’t get used up quick and they began to get a white color to them. I researched and found that baby carrots are grown as regular carrots only they are hybrid to be narrower and sweeter and then when they are harvested the carrot is cut and peeled and becomes two or three baby carrots.
Because they are both cut and peeled they need to treated ( bleached?) with the chlorine to prevent bacteria. So that white powdery stuff on them was the chlorine leeching out. When I found that out I made the choice to peel and cut my own carrots. Other than that I do sometimes add some bell pepper but beef stew is one of those recipes that you can adapt to suit what you like. She used green beans in this recipe. I have as well but most of the time I add peas. What ever you put in yours, making beef stew in the slow cooker is the easiest way to go.
