Hushpuppies are so good that even kids usually like them and they are a great addition to almost any meal. Do you ever wonder how things get their name? I do all the time and hushpuppies is one that I have wondered about and actually looked up one time to find out why the delicious morsels were called hushpuppies. The reason I found and I have no clue as to whether it is true or not but it seemed reasonable so it solved my curiosity. The reason stated was that back in the days before air conditioning and in the south where it is super hot, a lot of houses had a kitchen that was separate from the main house.
All the cooking was done there to avoid heating up the house and as the food was brought across the yard the dogs would be begging and jumping to try to get it, and so the story was that they started making fried balls of corn meal mush so they could toss them to the dogs to hush them up. Like I said I don’t know how true it is but it works for me. Now we make hushpuppies to eat, usually with a little minced onion in them and they are very good. Eatin On The Cheap has come up with a recipe for hushpuppies that also lets you use some of your zucchini up. They also added cheddar cheese and these are delicious.
I have made the recipe and they are really tasty. I make them sometimes to go with bean dishes and when I do I also add a minced jalapeno to the mix for an extra kick. They are good both ways and I make them both ways it just depends on what I am serving them with if they will have the pepper or not but if you like things with a little heat add a minced pepper or 2. I always remove the seeds but you can leave them if you like it hotter.
