Meat is one of the common foods, and it’s a source of protein. During pandemics like the Covid-19, buying meat from butcheries may not sound like a good idea because it can be quite hard to predict whether or not the meat is fit for consumption.

Smoking is a traditional way of preserving meat, but still relevant to date. This method of preserving food was mostly practised in tropical areas to dehydrate meat.

However, you are advised not to consume so much smoked meat because smoked meat contains carcinogens, which could be harmful to your health.

You can purchase smokers to help you smoke your meat, or you can make yours at home.

2. Salting

This is another way of how to preserve meat, though it was used mostly in the past. Salting may require you to invest some time, but it’s worth it. And for your information, traditional bacon was made preserved using this method.

Salting is cheap, so nearly everyone can use it as an alternative method of preserving meat. You only need to have a place where you can hang your meat once you have cured them with salt. Take note that you will have cut between the meat and apply salt before hanging in a cool place.

3. Brining

If you are serious about learning how to preserve meat using traditional methods that people never talk about, brining is your best bet. Now, in case you didn’t know, brine is a mixture of salt, water and sugar. The process involves weighing down meat in a crock of brine.

4. Pressure Canning

Because meat isn’t acidic, you cannot use a water bath to preserve your meat. However, with a pressure canner, you can store any beef.

Preserving through canning is one of the most common ways of keeping meat, and it doesn’t involve a lot of time as compared to other methods.

5. Dehydrating

If you’re looking for the healthiest and most straightforward methods of preserving meat, then this is a good bet. Not only does dehydration apply to beef, but also fresh vegetables. Also, depending on your budget, the method of dehydration will vary.

If you prefer drying your meat naturally, then a solar dehydrator will come in handy. However, you’ll have to purchase an electric dehydrator if you want to store your meat the digital way.

The best part is that electric dehydrators are affordable. To save on electricity cost, buy a larger one so that you preserve large quantities at a go. Even though solar dehydrators offer better value for money, they are weather dependent.

That said, make sure that you dry your meat adequately to prevent untimely spoilage due to moist, which eventually causes the beef to mold.
